Nobie's Newbies

It took us a year or so, but based on a recommendation from our friends who pour the libations at my wife’s favorite Houston wine bar - Camerata at Paulie’s (www.paulies.com/camerata/ - we finally got around to trying Nobie’s (www.nobieshtx.com). We happened to show up on a Whiskey Wednesday in the middle of #txotxfest no less! That meant half-price Weller Old-Fashioned’s and some unique Basque wine and cider options.

Nobie’s is a tiny little hipster paradise with a retro soundtrack and a mostly small plate menu with a couple of family-style options in a menu section called the HOV Lane (those of us in freeway-based cities will get the joke). The chef cut his teeth at Coltivare, among other places, so we went in feeling good about our chances for a great-tasting meal. Nobie's doesn't do reservations, but we managed to get the last available inside table in the place. Since we weren’t starving, we stuck with the small plates: baked French feta, grilled broccoli Caesar, spicy Mediterranean chicken meatballs, and “south of the border” style pork & beans made with black beans, molé broth, and tiny little arepas. I came away feeling like one of the 2018 World Champion Houston Astros: 4 swings, no misses!

Definitely goes on the list for a repeat visit…just as soon as I get to all the other places, of course… As I understand would be appropriate in Basque country this time of year...Topa!
